This app is advertised as a simple app for creating digital booklets for either personal, educational, or marketing use. Once a booklet is created, it may be shared via social media or other Internet means. The intent is to use the app to create viral content for the Internet.Show more screenshots »
Simplebooklet was founded in August 2010 by Scott Brownlee. Site traffic is erratic, wavering between 1-4K unique visitors per month. There is very little information available regarding the history of the application.
Differences between Simplebooklet and other apps is difficult to discern due to the app not functioning properly during review, but it seems most closely related to slideshow applications.
There is also an education edition, which offers a free year of Plus membership to educators, however the "Learn More" link for this option is broken.
The first choice a user is given is what they want to create: custom, selling, promoting, guiding, celebrating, or a blank booklet. The free plan limits the available templates to one for each type. Users may view the other templates that are offered in the Plus plan, but not use them unless they are Plus members. Once a template is chosen, it is simply a matter of adding content.
Clicking on add opens a menu for adding text, photos, music, video, background, documents, webpages, embed codes, start new pages, web apps, clip art, or deleting a page. Converting PDF and other page actions are only available with a plus plan.
The simple text editor has options for editing, style, rotation of images or text, moving layers, adding hyperlinks, and more. Text is entered in a simple WYSIWYG editor with options to change font size, color, and style.
Photos are easily uploaded and placed via drag and drop. Handles on the corners allow for resizing the image. Music may be uploaded in mp3, m4a, or aac file formats. The music player has a large box with a play/pause button. The icon with the file type may be covered up with an image. Video should be in H.264/mp4 format. A link to the free Handbrake conversion tool is provided. The white border may be removed using the style toolbar on the right hand side of the page.
Several custom backgrounds are available to add with just a couple of clicks.
Google doc addition is free, other types require an upgraded membership. With upgrade, users may add pdf, Word, Excel, Ai, Powerpoint, AutoCAD, and many more file types. Web page screen shots or live sites may be added to a page. Embed codes or user-written codes may be added to any page.
Google maps, Wufoo forms, and social media buttons may be added with just a few clicks. Limited free clipart is available and several images are available with upgrade.
To get started, the user must provide an email address and password. Users may sign in with Google, Google Apps, or Yahoo accounts.
There is a free version for anyone to use. It is not specific as to what this includes and whether there is a booklet limit. The Plus membership costs $20 per year and is advertising free, has unlimited booklets, professional templates, page actions, an in page document viewer, custom booklet addresses, collaboration options, premium design elements, enhanced support and beta features, and a 30 day money back guarantee.
Simplebooklet is recommended for educators or others who wish to produce booklet projects for brochures, classrooms, newsletters, or flyers.
